Metformin is a glucose-lowering oral medication, and is currently a standard treatment for type 2 diabetes. A recent study has found that metformin also significantly reduces LDL cholesterol (‘bad’ cholesterol). The authors suggest that metformin has potential benefits for use as a cholesterol-lowering drug in addition to a glucose-lowering drug. The researcher suggest that metformin could potentially be used in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
