When researchers discovered the hunger hormone ghrelin many years ago, they thought that blocking its effects would help reduce appetite and thus stimulate weight loss. However, past studies found that targeting this hormone alone did not promote weight loss nor curb the appetite.

Now, a recent study found that a certain protein called LEAP2 disrupts ghrelin’s system. Normally, ghrelin prevents blood sugar levels from dropping when there isn’t enough food. Ghrelin then triggers the release of growth hormone, and the growth hormone triggers the production of glucose. However, when the protein LEAP2 is introduced, the researchers found that it disrupted this system and prevented the increase of glucose.
