In a recently published study in PLOS Medicine, a team of researchers investigated a new way to determine whether a patient may be developing type 2 diabetes. They believe that through early detection, patients may be able to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes through behavioural changes in diet and exercise.

Since the development of type 2 diabetes is often the result of a poor diet and lack of exercise, the researchers evaluated levels of 27 types of fatty acids commonly found in the blood to determine a pattern among those who developed type 2 diabetes. They found a specific fatty acid combination that was strongly predictive of type 2 diabetes.
