Albumin is a protein normally abundant in the blood and rarely found in the urine. Adolescents with type 1 diabetes are at a higher risk of having high levels of urinary albumin, due to the rapid increases of passing albumin associated with puberty. This is an important health concern as abnormally high levels of urinary albumin are associated with an increased risk of kidney dysfunction and cardiovascular disease.
To treat high urinary albumin levels in type 1 diabetics, medications such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors as well as statins have been used. However, there has been limited research on the use of ACE inhibitors and statins in adolescents. To address this, researchers recently investigated the safety and efficacy of ACE inhibitors and statin therapies on urinary albumin levels in adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
